International Day of Charity, 5 September
El Día Internacional de la Caridad se estableció
con el objetivo de sensibilizar y movilizar a las personas, las organizaciones
no gubernamentales y las partes interesadas de todo el mundo para ayudar a
otras personas mediante actividades filantrópicas y de voluntariado.
The
International Day of Charity was established with the objective of sensitizing
and mobilizing people, NGOs, and stakeholders all around the world to help
others through volunteer and philanthropic activities.
La fecha del 5 de septiembre fue elegida para
conmemorar el aniversario del fallecimiento de la Madre Teresa de Calcuta, Premio
Nobel de la Paz en 1979 "por el trabajo emprendido en la lucha para
superar la pobreza y el sufrimiento, que también constituyen una amenaza para
la paz".
The
date of 5 September was chosen in order to commemorate the anniversary of the
passing away of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, who received the Nobel Peace Prize
in 1979 "for work undertaken in the struggle to overcome poverty and
distress, which also constitute a threat to peace."
Monja y misionera reconocida, la Madre Teresa
nació en 1910 en la antigua Yugoslavia, con el nombre de Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu.
En 1928 se fue a la India, donde se dedicó a ayudar a los indigentes. En 1948
se hizo ciudadana india y en 1950 fundó la orden de las Misioneras de la
Caridad en Calcuta, que alcanzó notoriedad por su labor entre los más pobres y
los moribundos.
Mother
Teresa, the renowned nun and missionary, was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in
1910. In 1928 she went to India, where she devoted herself to helping the
destitute. In 1948 she became an Indian citizen and founded the order of
Missionaries of Charity in Kolkota (Calcutta) in 1950, which became noted for
its work among the poor and the dying in that city.
Durante 45 años ejerció su ministerio entre
pobres, enfermos, huérfanos y moribundos, mientras las Misioneras de la Caridad
se extendían, primero por la India y luego por otros países, con la creación de
hospicios y residencias para los pobres y desamparados.
For
over 45 years she ministered to the poor, sick, orphaned and dying, while
guiding the Missionaries of Charity’s expansion, first in India and then in
other countries, including hospices and homes for the poorest and homeless.
La beneficencia, así como el voluntariado y la
filantropía, constituye una verdadera vinculación social y contribuye a la
creación de sociedades inclusivas y resistentes al permitir aliviar los peores
efectos de las crisis humanitarias, complementar los servicios públicos de
atención de la salud, la educación, la vivienda y la protección de la infancia.
Además, ayuda a promover la cultura, la ciencia, el deporte y la protección del
patrimonio cultural y natural. También ayuda a concienciar sobre los derechos
de los marginados y desfavorecidos, y permite guardar nuestra humanidad en
situaciones de conflicto.
Charity,
like the notions of volunteerism and philanthropy, provides real social bonding
and contributes to the creation of inclusive and more resilient societies.
Charity can alleviate the worst effects of humanitarian crises, supplement
public services in health care, education, housing and child protection. It
assists the advancement of culture, science, sports, and the protection of
cultural and natural heritage. It also promotes the rights of the marginalized
and underprivileged and spreads the message of humanity in conflict situations.
